Music Learning and the Brain Music Learning and the Brain
We were delighted to welcome Dr Anita Collins, Neuromusical Educator, to St Rita’s College in February!
Through tailored presentations to students, staff, and parents Dr Collins shared her knowledge and research on the power of the auditory processing network and the impact of music learning on children’s brain development.
- Year 5 & Year 7 students discovered how learning music strengthens their brains, boosts memory, and enhances problem-solving skills. They also explored how listening to different music can impact their emotional state.
- All College staff gained a deeper understanding of how music transforms children's cognitive abilities and supports their overall learning by developing stronger connections between the auditory, visual, and motor cortices and increases the amount of grey matter (storage systems and structures) and white matter (the message system) in the brain.
- Music staff enjoyed a special session with Dr Collins, exploring innovative ways to enrich our students' musical education.
- Parents received practical tips to support their child’s musical journey and heard how students learning music for 3-5 years in a structured way can strengthen their brain to positively impact academic achievement, social skills, and wellbeing.
Dr Collins' visit was an enriching experience, highlighting the lifelong benefits of music education and we are grateful she could share her passion and knowledge with so many members of our College community.
